The code sections
IRC M1401.3: heating and cooling equipment shall be sized in accordance with ACCA Manual S based on loads calculated with ACCA Manual J or other approved methods. IECC R403.7 contains the same requirement for energy code compliance. IRC M1601.1 references ACCA Manual D for duct systems. States and cities adopt different editions and may add local amendments.
What reviewers look for
Design temperatures that match the local jurisdiction, the correct orientation, window areas and U-factors that match the plans, an indoor design temperature of 70 °F heating and 75 °F cooling, a duct location that matches the drawings, and equipment capacity within the Manual S limits.
Common reasons for rejection
Loads calculated for the wrong orientation, design temperatures that are more extreme than the local values, windows that do not match the plans, equipment far larger than the load, and a Manual D that uses a different blower than the equipment in Manual S.
How we handle it
We use the plans and specs you send, the design conditions for the project location and the equipment you intend to install. If the reviewer asks for corrections related to our report, we revise it at no charge.
Last reviewed November 2026. Code sections refer to the International Residential Code and International Energy Conservation Code; local amendments may apply.
