What is a Manual J calculation?

Manual J is the ACCA procedure for residential heating and cooling load calculations. What it includes, why codes require it and what a report looks like.

The short answer

Manual J is the residential load calculation procedure published by ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America). It calculates how much heat a house loses on a cold design day and gains on a hot design day, room by room. The result, in Btu per hour, is what the heating and cooling equipment has to deliver.

What goes in

The calculation uses the actual building: wall, ceiling and floor areas and their insulation, every window and door with its U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient, orientation and shading, air leakage, where the ducts run, internal gains from people and appliances, and the outdoor design temperatures for the location.

What comes out

A Manual J report shows the design conditions, the heating load, the sensible and latent cooling load for the whole house and for every room, and the airflow each room needs. That is the starting point for Manual S (equipment) and Manual D (ducts).

Why codes require it

The International Residential Code (section M1401.3) and the IECC (section R403.7) require heating and cooling equipment to be sized with ACCA Manual S, based on loads calculated with ACCA Manual J or another approved method. Many building departments ask for the report with the permit application for new homes, additions and often for equipment replacement.

Why it matters on site

Rules of thumb like square feet per ton ignore windows, insulation and climate. Oversized equipment short-cycles, removes less humidity, is louder and costs more. Undersized equipment cannot hold the temperature on the hottest and coldest days. A Manual J avoids both.

FAQ

What Is a Manual J?: answered.

How long does a Manual J take?

With complete plans we deliver in 2–3 business days.

Who can do a Manual J?

Anyone trained in the procedure can prepare one; many building departments require that it be done with ACCA-approved software and signed by the preparer. Check your local requirements.

How much does a Manual J cost?

$100 per house for Manual J, Manual S and Manual D together. No subscription and no minimum order.

How fast do I get the report?

Usually 2–3 business days after we receive complete plans and specs.

Will the building department accept it?

Reports follow ACCA Manual J 8th Edition, Manual S and Manual D and use the plans you send. Acceptance is up to your building department; if plan review asks for corrections to our report, we revise it at no charge.
